A funny Nokia C7 ad shows just how useful a front-facing camera can be

Well, I don’t know how much truth there is in advertising but I’m willing to bet such encounters like the one shown in this ad are purely fictional. Either that or I should have become a taxi driver.

Anyway, if a pretty girl does walk into your taxi then you’d better have a Nokia C7 at the ready as this ad shows…

See? Things wouldn’t have gone so smooth if your phone didn’t have a front-facing camera like the Nokia C7 does. And of course, a quick and easy way to post a photo to Facebook is vital too.

The guys at Engadget had the wonderful opportunity to do a brief hands-on on a pre-release Nokia N8 unit in London. Thanks to their live shots, you can really see the N8 size in perspective.

Well, it is big. In woman’s hands, it’s HUGE! Nokia should really get some male hand models for future presentations of the device.

Despite that, the our fellow tech journalists note, it’s surprisingly light for its size and the curved edges obviously make it quite pocket-friendly.

Unfortunately, they weren’t allowed to turn the phone on, so the hardware is the only part that we see here. For more pictures check their post.

A kidney or two will get you a Celsius X-VI-II Papillon, the mechanical phone!

How many of you had a calculator watch? And how many had a mechanical phone? See, mechanical is, um, cooler! Yeah. Who needs a Ferrari when you can own this head turner…

This extravagant phone will be announced tomorrow and more details will become available. Until then here’s what I know – the Celsius X-VI-II Papillon is a clamshell with mechanical gadgetry inside, 547 hand assembled pieces to be precise.

The mechanism operates the clock on the top part of the clamshell and the one on the inside (above the screen). The cover is transparent so you can see the whole shebang tick and there’s even speculation that the mechanical parts play a role in the phone itself, perhaps charge the battery from the movement of the phone like a self-winding watch.

The Celsius X-VI-II Papillon is lavish, exorbitant and pricy

If you though to yourself “I want one!” then better hurry – the Celsius X-VI-II Papillon is probably going to be a strictly limited edition. At 300 000 US dollars a pop that’s hardly a surprise. That’s right, it’s three hundred thousand, I’ve counted the zeroes several times.

If that’s too rich for your blood (or you have some common sense) you can settle for another kind of Papillon. They are very athletic apparently. Oh, one more thing that makes the phone even manlier – “papillon” is French for “butterfly” (the dog was named so because of its ears).

64-bit Firefox beta available for download now

64-bit Firefox beta available for download now, let the debugging start

A 64-bit Firefox browser to go with your 64-bit OS is what you always secretly wanted, right? Well if you aren’t afraid of a few minor bugs and glitches you can now download the pre-release version.

Well, okay minor bugs and glitches may not be the best way to describe this as it is a really, really early pre-release version. There isn’t even an automated installer and you will need Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable Package (x64) to help install it on your PC. Oh, and there’s no Flash support yet either.

So yeah, if you are willing to live with those, head to the source link to get the installation instructions. I dare you.

New Year's Day breaks iOS 6 Do Not Disturb mode, makes it silence your iPhone permanently

The Do Not Disturb mode introduced with Apple’s latest iOS 6 appears to have a serious bug. Since the turn of the year, it stopped functioning as promised and prevented quite a lot of people from getting their calls and messages.

The DND feature allows you to set a period of time when your iPhone will stop alerting you of incoming calls, messages and notifications. It doesn’t affects the alarms though.

Unfortunately since last midnight the DND mode won’t turn off automatically once the scheduled time comes and continues to silence pretty much everything. If you are in iPhone user, don’t panic, your friends didn’t forget you (probably), your phone is not alerting. And maybe those friends you have a hard time reaching since last night, are probably victims of the said bug.

Anyway, you can’t fix this with just switching the feature on/off (already tried this, it eventually get stuck again), so you’ll have to turn it off until an official update becomes available.

New version of redsn0w is out

New version of redsn0w is out, jailbreaks everything 4.3.2 but the iPad 2, again

Apple released iOS 4.3.2 shortly after iOS 4.3.1. It fixed a few things and brought another batch of security updates making the jailbreak tools unusable once again.

Well, the jailbreaking community is a hard working one and a new version of redsn0w compatible with the iOS 4.3.2 is now available.

The latest redsn0w version jailbreaks every iOS 4.3.2-supported device but the iPad 2. It seems Apple has done good job protecting it. The jailbreak works on iPad 1, iPod Touch 3G/4G and iPhone 3GS/4 (GSM).

A few leaked webOS 3

A few leaked webOS 3.0 screenshots give us a glimpse of what’s coming this summer

In case you haven’t heard HP is preparing to launch a webOS-based tablet called TouchPad this summer. It will run on the tablet-optimized webOS 3.0 that nobody has seen. Up until now.

Today five screenshots taken from a webOS 3.0 emulator escaped into the wild for our viewing pleasure.

The shots give us a glimpse into the browser, messaging, maps and music apps plus the dock icons and notification area.

As you can see all the apps use a minimalistic and intuitive interface. The Web (the browser app) has been renamed to Browser. There you can also see the new virtual QWERTY keyboard, which has a dedicated number row and a Next key to ease your interaction with various page elements (such as text fields).

The maps and messaging apps

HP replaced Google with Bing maps within the Maps application and added map scale info.

The notification area and the music player

The notification area now occupies just the upper right corner, while the Dock seems to be intact.

One more thing – the new music player seems awfully familiar. iPad anyone?

The webOS 3.0 seems promising and so does the TouchPad. We’ll know more this summer. The webOS should also be available on HP PCs and laptops later this year.
